Movie Opener Brainstorming & Research
Today I have been asked to view 8 other movie openings from other very talented past Media Studies students. I am going to discuss my observations and what I think about each one. So enjoy! :)

I liked how bright the entire movie opening was. The close-up shots of the main character picking up the items from his car were also done very well. The big, bright, white letters of the movie title stand out and keep the audience's attention. The next few close-up scenes directly after the title sequence were very fast-paced and well done. I really liked the music playing throughout the opening because it was upbeat and really fit with the opening. I think maybe the scenes of him kicking the soccer ball could have been a bit smoother, but overall I like how we as the audience felt like we were on the field with him. I thought the transition of the ball to the other character was very well thought out and brought uniqueness to the opening. I really liked the scene where we can see the player from being the guy's shoulder. I really enjoyed the element of suspense towards the end because we don't know who that guy is and what he wants. Something that I would do differently is maybe included fewer solo soccer shots and maybe include another character so we can get some dialogue sequences.

I really liked the nature shots at the beginning of the opening. It makes it feel very calm and peaceful. I think maybe they should have played around with close-up or wide shots to get a variety of different types. I also think the title of the film should pop and stand out more because right now it almost gets lost in the plants we see around it. The music played through the beginning was very peaceful and relaxing. I also thought the narration was very unique and interesting. I liked how later they used overhead shots, over-the-shoulder shots, and close-up shots. I like how they incorporated flashbacks scenes. The white filter of them allows the audience to immediately know that these scenes already happened and that the character may be reminiscing about them. The use of close-up shots allows us to see what the characters are feeling. I think this movie opening was very well created and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
#3. Dare to thrill:
I really enjoyed the font of the title from the beginning because I thought it was different and fit the storyline of the movie opening. I enjoyed the fast-paced feeling of the movie opening, I think the quick shots and music helps establish that sense of action. I would say my favorite part of the movie opening was the car shots. I thought they were very well done and cool to see. I also liked the variety of camera angles and shots they included to put this together. I do really like the element of mystery at the end because it makes people want to continue watching and learn more. I also liked how they restated their title at the end of the opening. I liked the music that played throughout the opening, but I do wish that it was a little quieter because it does kind of overpower the voices of the students. Overall, I really enjoyed watching this movie opening. The only thing that I would do differently would be to make the plot a little clearer. As much as I thoroughly enjoyed this opening, the plot was a little confusing for me to understand. Towards the end you see the group of friends drive off and we don't know where they go and why they stop.#4. Always Watching

I liked how they included flashbacks scenes. while he is talking to the therapists. The filter of these scenes gives the reader the understanding that it is in the past. The music and sounds that play in the background also contribute to the overall suspense. I liked how they went back and forth between the present-day scenes and the past. I really enjoyed the mirror scene because I thought that was a super creative way of including an over- the- shoulder shot. The constant dialogue was very interesting as well.
#5. The Blue Boar:

I enjoyed seeing the close-up shots of the forest background and the close-up shots were very creative. The hazy filter of some scenes indicated a flashback or a scene taking place in the future. Showing the close-up shot emphasizes this character and what she's saying. I think the back and forth between the conversation and the flashback and future scenes were done very well. I think it is a seamless transition between the two. The use of different shots and angles such as over-the-shoulder shots and close-up shots really adds to the creativity and liveliness of the opening. The music playing was very relaxing and went with the overall aesthetic of the film. Lastly, I loved the transition from the plants in the shape of her logo to the logo was very unique and nice to see.
#6. White Coat:

The animation at the beginning of the opening looks very professional. I think that this may have been my favorite one out of them all. I love the concept and I think it was executed very well. The lighting really pulled everything together. I also love the blue hue to the entire opening because it added to the suspense and gloominess. Despite there being no dialogue, I think the scenes themselves told the story. The music playing really added to the suspense and mystery of the entire opening. The close-up shots of the person in the laboratory were done very well and the title at the end was a very unique way of continuing the suspense. This could potentially set it up as a flashback if the movie were to continue.
#7. Stalker:

I like the suspense that the beginning has as she gets ready and looks out her window. The font of the title I think matches perfectly with the theme and feel of the movie. It adds to the suspense which I really like. Overall I liked this movie opening, but I just feel like the plot can make a bit more sense because it almost feels like it jumps around a lot. First, we see her in the room getting ready and then we just see her sitting on the floor at school. There is definitely a time jump we are just unaware it occurred. I do like the idea of her finding the note from her stalker in her pencil pouch. I think there could be more types of shots and angles included. I liked how when she was in the car you can tell how frantic she was. I also liked how you could hear her heartbeat as she got into the car, but I wish there was some music throughout the openings because at times it was a bit quiet. I thought the ending was funny and perfect. We are left on a cliffhanger as we now wonder what happened to her.
#8. Nostalgia:

To start off, I like the production logo at the beginning because it reminds me of a real movie. I think the scene, in the beginning, was a little long and the title should have stayed on the screen a little longer to read it better. I think the use of painting was a very creative way to include scenery in the opening. I just think that switching from the painting and real life should be a bit smoother and not as abrupt. I also liked the close-up shots. I do think that they could be a little smoother. I love the transition of the older woman to a younger girl I thought that was really cool.
Summary of the Brainstorming Session:
I really enjoyed watching each and every movie opening because it gave me an idea of what I will be creating shortly. It also made me brainstorm some things that I would want and wouldn't want in my own opening. For example, I realized that I do want to include dialogue to progress the storyline and allow my audience to connect with some of the characters. Also, I've realized just how important lighting and stabilizing the camera are while filming. So my group and I will take that into consideration. In many of the openings, the groups include a variety of different camera shots and angles which is what I would like to include in ours. Lastly, everything needs to balance out. For instance, the music can't overpower the dialogue and the lighting has to go with the mood and aesthetic of the scene. I think after brainstorming that the lighting and how we use the camera will be extremely important.
