Costuming
Hi guys! Today's blog post will be all about costuming. We realize just how important costumes are to a movie because they make the character. They can explain who the character is and give us details that aren't explicitly stated about them. For our movie, we did research based on other stereotypical high school teenager costumes. We knew from the beginning we wanted our character so represent the basic stereotypes: The Jock, The Rich Girl, The Nerd, The Artsy Girl. We also wanted to put in the effort to come up with detailed costumes for our minor characters as well. So, I am very excited to announce the costumes of our characters.
The Jock (Jacob):
For the jock, we decided to have him dressed in a full-on stereotypical jock outfit. We will have him dressed in a red lettermen jacket with a white polo and blue jeans and sneakers. I think this is the most notable outfit for a stereotypical high school jock and it will be very recognizable on screen. I can also see the jock having a picture-perfect life on the front, but in reality, it isn't as perfect as everyone thinks, so, I imagine his hair to be very neat and not messy in order to portray that sense of perfectness. I see him having slightly long hair (to his shoulders). So his entire outfit will be very put together without a thread out of place. His shirt would be tucked in and his pants would be folded towards the entire to hide the imperfections someone may see on the surface. For props, he should be wearing an athlete ring. His character will also be known for being a 'hot head' or getting angry fairly quickly, so we want to incorporate the color red throughout his outfit to reflect that hidden detail of his outfit. This method will be shown through his red lettermen jacket.
The Rich Girl (Kayla):
For the rich girl, we took inspiration off of that stereotype found on TV, such as Gossip Girl. The overall look for this character will be very put together and preppy. She would wear a sweater vest, skirt, leggings, and ballet flats. The accessories for this character would be very important. It would make the look. She will be wearing a piece of jewelry that shows the audience her wealth. We decided on having her wear a pearl necklace and a headband. She would also accessorize with other pieces of jewelry such as bracelets and necklaces. For her character we envision her to be very stuck up, pretentious, and wealthy. So, we want to add purple pops of color to her outfit. Purple is associated with regality and wealth, meaning we would add pops of color into her sweater vest. We also want to use a very elegant color. We chose black which means that she would wear black tights and a black perfectly pleated skirt. Being someone from a very rich family means she always looks picture perfect which is represented through her outfit. Similar to the jock, she wouldn't have a thread out of place and her outfit will appear to be perfect. Through this, we can show her "perfect lifestyle". For her hair, she would have straightened hair and would wear a headband. As for props, she would have a designer-looking bag with her.
The Nerd (Tyler):
Our goal for the nerd costume is for him to look like a dialed-down version of a stereotypical nerd. We strayed away from the steroytpyical suspenders, braces, and broken glasses with tape. We instead want him to wear a button-down shirt, pants, and glasses. His button-down would be blue to represent wisdom and intuition. We also want him to wear regular glasses to still appeal to the stereotype. For shoes, he would simply wear dress shoes. We chose this look for this character because we want to convey his personality and difference from the other characters. His outfit may not be one that other students would find "fashionable" or "cute", but I think that also portrays another part of his character, that being that he won't change to fit into the "high school norms". For props, he would obviously have his glasses and I can imagine him having something to calm him down during his interrogation whether that be gum or even a stress ball. FOr hair, he would have a shortcut that is almost close to a buzzcut.
The Artsy Girl (Me, Aaliyah):
Our goal for this girl is to convey someone who not only loves art but is also overly emotional. For this look, we would have the character wearing overalls with paint splattered on them, an old green t-shirt, and converse. The paint-splattered on her overalls conveys the stereotypical art student. We want the shirt to be a light color to convey her creativity and imagination. Her emotions can be conveyed through the blue color of her overalls. We want her to be accessorized with very bright and colorful jewelry as well as a beanie. For hair, she would have her hair into messy braids. Through this somewhat messy outfit compared to the others, we are able to get the idea that she may not what others think and that she just likes to be her own person. The color green will also be conveyed throughout her outfit to convey sensitivity. Overall, her outfits represent her unconventionality.
The next characters are pretty self-explanatory. We need to include police officers to arrest the characters and interrogate them. For their outfits, they will wear officer uniforms, which will be either black or navy blue and during the interrogation, they will wear a button-down shirt with slacks. For props, they will be carrying the usual handcuffs and they will carry a briefcase since that is where the evidence will come from. Since we are unsure as to who will be the police officer, we are still unsure of the hair situation at the moment.
